Truck Accidents

Accidents involving large commercial semi-trucks are one of the most serious incidents one can be involved in. Nationally, according to Truckinfo.net, about 5,000 people are killed in truck accidents annually in the United States. One of the most dangerous areas for big truck accidents is what’s known as known as the I-65 corridor starting in the Chicago area and extending to Indianapolis.

In fact, Indiana is ranked as one of the top 10 worst states for truck fatalities during a 3-year period ending in 2014. with 112 fatalities in 2012, 117 fatalities in 2013, increasing to a total of 129 fatalities in 2014. That makes it an average of more than 119 fatalities in large truck and bus accidents in Indiana during this period, and a staggering 10.3% increase over these three years.

These trucks can cause serious devastation if involved in a crash with a motor vehicle, a motorcycle or even a pedestrian. Simply, put they are a lot bigger than we are. Serious injury or even death is too often the result.

Estimates of 15.5 million trucks operate in the U.S. Of this figure 2 million are tractor trailers. It is estimated over 3.5 million truck drivers work in the U.S. It is safe to say that the majority of these truckers are skilled and responsible drivers. They take their jobs seriously and realize the importance of driving safely and within the confines of the law.

Still, too often we hear about those reckless truckers who have been driving while under the influence of alcohol, prescription or over-the-counter drugs. They may drive too fast for conditions or be driving without adequate rest. Others are simply distracted by something, including texting and driving. Impairments like this account for about 50% of serious truck accidents.

The other half is usually due to problems with the truck itself – lack of maintenance which cause failed brakes, improper or worn tires, and loads that are too heavy for the truck.
